Origins

The common name heather refers to a variety of plants in the Ericaceae family. Those in the genus Erica are often called heaths, while those in the Calluna genus are called heathers. The Erica genus includes more than 500 species of evergreen plants native primarily to South Africa, but also to Europe and Turkey. Erica persoluta, which is pictured at right, is one of those species.

Availability and Vase Life

Year round 1-2 weeks.

Care and Handling

Remove bottom leaves and flowers that will fall below the water line. Do not densly pack heather into an arrangement as it needs air circulation to prevent the development of mold on its flowers. Suitable for drying. Spray with a commercial fixative to avoid flower shattering.

Design Uses

Heather is a fragrant, colorful flower that's often used for weddings. For everyday work, heather makes a nice filler flower for garden-style designs and other arrangements.
