Origins
Lilies of the valley derive their quaint common name from their botanical name, convallaria, which is derived from convallis, the Latin word for "valley." The word alludes to the delicate flowers' favorite shaded habitat. In the wild, lilies of the valley can be found throughout much of temperate Europe. Some botanists even consider the tiny flowers to be native to the mountain woods of Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. They're members of the Liliaceae family. |
