Origins

Scabiosa, or pincushion flower, is a member of the Dipsacaceae family, named for the contagious skin disease, scabies, which it was once thought to cure. Originating in southern Europe, this flower's name also translates to mourning bride. Florists use annual and perennial cultivars of scabiosa; the better-known Caucasica is a perennial, and the denser, double variety, Scabiosa atropurpurea, is an annual. Scabiosa stellata, known as drumstick plant, is also available. Scabiosa colors range from delicate lavender-blue to salmon-pink.
